An interview with Asham Kamboj

In wanting to investigate and understand the experiences of British South Asian creatives further, I’m delighted to share my interview with filmmaker Asham Kamboj. Kamboj is a writer and director who has made a number of short films including Rent (1999), The Sandwich (2002) and most recently A Place To Stay (2020). He directed his debut feature film, Basement, in 2010. I started our conversation wanting to know what inspired Kamboj to want to make films.

From The Director

The spark for Stealing came in late 2014 in rainy Paris traveling in a taxi to a cinema. I noticed someone had left a USB on the back seat. I picked it up and wondered what was on it. Curiosity is a killer I felt the need to be nosey, but being the good citizen I handed it to the taxi driver, unlike our lead character Jude who decided to take a different approach and it opened another experience. It played on me, what if I had taken it. What was on it, who’s was it?

This experience instigated me to write Stealing.
